QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
  • Should we follow the people who rely on astronomical calculations with regard to sighting the new moon?
We have been living in this area for a year and a half, but it is well-known that the people arround here fast according to astronomical calculations, and they do not pay any attention at all to sighting the moon as Islamically prescribed. They have stated that it will be on Thursday. Should we follow the State Ministry of Awqaf and fast with them, as we did last year, or should we follow the land of the Haramayn with regard to sighting the moon as Islamically prescribed?
  • Ruling on lawyer wearing the traditional wig in court
I work as a lawyer in my country, where it is required, when appearing in the supreme court, that the lawyer should wear a gown and wig. This wig does not come under the heading of hair that is worn in place of one’s original hair; rather the tradition in the courts is for the lawyer to wear a white-coloured wig. Perhaps this is a custom that was taken from the English. My question is: What is the ruling on wearing this wig, when without this wig the lawyer cannot appear before the judge in the court room?
  • The imam asks others to lead the people in Taraweeh, then he leads them in praying Witr, then they lead more prayers
My question is about praying with the imam until he finishes. In the mosque where we pray, my friends lead the worshippers in prayer with the permission of the regular imam, who allows them to lead the worshippers in praying Taraweeh because their voices are more beautiful. What happens is that my friends lead the worshippers in praying eight rak‘ahs, after which they step away and the regular imam goes forward and leads the people in praying Witr with three rak‘ahs. After he finishes, my friends come and again lead the worshippers who want to continue until they have done twenty-one rak‘ahs. What should we do in order to attain the reward of praying with the imam until he finishes? Should we pray Witr with the regular imam, or add an extra rak‘ah to that prayer with the imam so as to make it even-numbered, then pray with our friends and pray Witr with them? What should we do? This happens in many mosques in our country. Finally: after finishing the eight rak‘ahs, my friends step away and do not pray with the imam. Is their action correct or should they also not leave the imam so that they may attain the reward of qiyaam?
